In 1912, the Krupp company developed the first chrome nickel steels which could be used in practical applications. This alloy, known as “stainless steel”, is mainly used in the semiconductor industry and in vacuum technology, in the chemical industry, in aircraft construction and in food manufacturing, as well as in the home.
Chrome nickel steels are notable particularly for the following characteristics:
- High corrosion resistance
- Good resistance to heat
- Temperature resistance
There is a long tradition of scrap recovery in the steel industry, and it does not affect the quality of the newly-melted steel. As an annual average, over 80 per cent of metal scrap is used. Non-rusting steel scrap also contains valuable elements like chrome, nickel, molybdenum, etc.
