Translated interview with Thomas Furger - the Processing Production Manager at BWB-Betschart AG. He assigns the mechanical work to the SBU and coordinates how it is done.
Mr. Furger, what does BWB-Betschart AG do?
We are specialists in processing and finishing aluminium. Our employees know all about this versatile material and how it can best be used. We advise our customers on the right choice and procure of materials, process and finish the aluminium. We are a single-source provider, offering our customers in the industrial, aviation, medical technology and consumer goods sectors a complete service, right through to installation.
What are the distinguishing characteristics of aluminium when it has been given a finishing treatment?
On the one hand, the surface of aluminium is often given a special finish for decorative purposes. On the other hand, there are some important technical factors: better protection against corrosion, colourfastness, sometimes a more hard-wearing surface and good anti-friction properties. The metallic character of the surface of the aluminium is not affected by the finishing treatment.
Where are your specialists based?
In the beautiful Engelberg valley, in Stans-Oberdorf to be precise, and in ten other locations in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Romania. The BWB Group as a whole has about 800 employees. From Stans, the headquarters of the holding company, it reaches out into the world of surface engineering.
Why does BWB-Betschart AG work with the SBU?
The SBU helps us with specific jobs and, if we have a heavy workload, with processing certain components. And they have been doing so for more than ten years. We have similar partnerships with other institutions and companies in Switzerland which offer protected workplaces.

It's a real win-win situation for both companies: we know that there's a trained and proven team in the workshop ready to help us when we need them. And the SBU receives some interesting jobs that are ideal for doing with the machinery that they have. Last but not least, each company learns something from every new job.
