New buildings for St.Gallen cantonal hospital

The 'come together' generational construction project involves renovating the St.Gallen cantonal hospital (KSSG) in stages, i.e. the new buildings 10, 07A and 07B, and construction of the new Ostschweizer Kinderspital (OKS) children's hospital. The ground-breaking ceremony for the OKS in early April saw another milestone recently reached. The relocation of the children's hospital is planned for 2026.
The KSSG's replacement building 10 is part of this multi-stage construction process, and has housed the Clinic for Endocrinology/Diabetology incl. nutritional counselling, the oncology/haematology outpatients' clinic, the Clinic for Psychosomatics & Consultant Psychiatry and the Outpatient Clinic for Nephrology/Haemodialysis since autumn 2018. Building 10 is connected to building 25 by a walkway. The design enables flexible room partitioning, meaning it will also be able to adapt to the hospital's usage needs even in future.
The aluminium shell of the bronze six-storey building was anodised in BWB-Colinal 3165. The colour scheme of the classically rear-ventilated aluminium-sheet façade is geared around the KSSG's existing buildings. The architect describes the new structure as elegant, functional and timeless.

'Given its size, the hospital complex is virtually a district in its own right – and that is extremely challenging, from both an operational and urban-planning perspective, ' says architect Fawad Kazi, describing the difficulties of the project.

The shell of the new tower 07A has already been completed and should be ready for occupation in 2023. The new building of the children's hospital is expected to be occupied at the beginning of 2026. The planned windows, colour-anodised in BWB Colinal 3145, form a warm contrast with the pale concrete façade.
