In 2005, 35 years after its completion, the skyscraper which was constructed between 1967 and 1970 for the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA) was showing its age. The dark stone slabs with which it was clad looked forbidding and the windows and blinds were yellowed.

The SIA therefore invited three teams to study the renovation of the building. Romero & Schaefle Architects from Zurich were awarded the contract. They brightened up the previously austere façade with slanted windows, creating a new, playful aesthetic.

The new façade was created between 2007 and 2008 using glass and aluminium in the natural shade EV1. Both the architectural design and the materials turned out to be extremely sustainable.
