Natural aluminum surfaces for a serene building envelope

Perforated corrugated aluminum panels were used for the building envelope of the new Ferrum headquarters in Schafisheim. From a distance, the façade’s structure gives the building a calm and uniform appearance. At the same time, the perforations allow natural light to enter the rooms behind them.

Approximately 380 m² of aluminum facade was E6-matted by BWB-Aloxyd AG and then colorlessly anodised in EV1 with a coating thickness of 20 μm. The anodized coating provides lasting protection for the surface against the elements, while preserving the natural appearance of the aluminum. The matt finish reduces light reflections and enhances the uniform façade effect intended by the architectural concept.

A facade as a unifying element

The particular challenge of the new Ferrum headquarters was to architecturally integrate production, logistics, development, and administration into a single cohesive whole. This role is fulfilled by the continuous metal façade, which lends the building a calm and unified appearance despite its size and complexity. Perforated aluminum panels define the architectural character of the new building while also allowing natural light to enter the rooms behind them. The uniform materiality supports the architectural concept and gives the building its distinctive appearance.
