From biodiesel to waste heat recovery -
Steps towards decarbonization at BWB-Altenrhein AG

At the beginning of 2025, BWB-Altenrhein AG switched its own trucks to biodiesel. This fuel, which is produced from residual and waste materials, reduces CO₂ emissions by 90% and marks a further step towards a low-emission future.

On the road with biodiesel

The BWB-Altenrhein AG truck covers a distance of around 55,000 kilometers per year – that’s about 1.4 times the circumference of the earth. By switching to biodiesel, around 33 tons of CO₂ emissions can be saved each year, comparable to the emissions of 16 economy class return flights between Zurich and New York.
The biodiesel used is obtained entirely from residual and waste materials (biomass). This not only protects the environment, but also reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

Sustainable energy projects

In recent years, BWB-Altenrhein AG has implemented numerous measures to improve its environmental footprint. Photovoltaic modules have been installed on the roofs of the production halls to generate environmentally friendly solar power. Most of this energy is used directly in production operations.
The heated lake water used to cool the anodizing baths is used via an anergy network to efficiently heat a neighbouring residential area. In addition, the used pickling agent from the baths is reused by the Altenrhein Wastewater Association (AVA) for wastewater treatment.
These projects illustrate BWB-Altenrhein AG’s commitment to sustainable energy generation and the responsible use of resources. We look forward to implementing further exciting projects in the future that will help us to achieve our climate targets and protect our environment in the long term.
